When Can You Call a Tile in American Mah Jongg?
A player may call a tile when another player discards a tile that completes a legal grouping in their hand.
In American Mah Jongg, tiles may be called only to complete a pung, kong, or quint, and only if the hand is not designated as concealed on the NMJL card.
Tiles may not be called to complete singles or pairs. If a hand is marked Concealed, no tiles may be called at any point during play, and the hand must be completed entirely by drawing from the wall.
Calling a tile results in the completed grouping being exposed on the rack, and the calling player takes the next turn.
