What Are Flowers in American Mah Jongg?

Flowers are suitless tiles used in many American Mah Jongg hands.

American Mah Jongg standard play is based on 8 Flowers.

Jokers may be used to replace a Flower only when the Flower is part of a Pung, Kong, Quint, or Sextet. Jokers may not be used to represent Singles or Pairs, even when the card groups singles together for visual appeal.

It's often discouraged to pass Flowers during the Charleston because they appear often throughout the NMJL card.
