How Many Tiles Are in a Winning American Mah Jongg Hand?
 

A winning American Mah Jongg hand always contains 14 tiles. This total includes all tiles on the rack and any exposed groupings that form the completed hand.

Players are initially dealt 13 tiles, with the dealer starting play with 14.

 

During the game, a player maintains the correct tile count by drawing one tile and discarding one tile on each turn.
 

Regardless of how the hand is built, a legal Mah Jongg declaration requires exactly 14 tiles that match one complete line on the current NMJL card.
