How Do Dragons Match Suits in American Mah Jongg?
In American Mah Jongg, Dragons are associated with specific suits when they appear together in a hand. This relationship is defined by the NMJL card and is consistent across years.
The suit–dragon matches are:
-
Red Dragon → Craks
-
Green Dragon → Bams
-
White Dragon → Dots
When a hand includes both Dragons and suited tiles, the Dragon must match the suit indicated by the card. This relationship applies whenever Dragons are used in combination with suited groupings.
The NMJL card always shows when and how Dragons are used, and those instructions determine the correct suit relationships for the hand.
